The deciduous Silver Birch (Betula pendula) is widespread throughout Europe and Canada, but also grows in some areas of Asia. This tree grows a single trunk with no splits about 30 m high, and it's branches are pendulous.
Light forests and heathland areas are the prime growing spots for the Silver Birch, especially where the soil is lighty sanded. The Silver Birch thrives throughout the forest, even in areas where the soil is dry.
When the tree matures, the bark is a silvery-white colour with black patches around the base, usually in a distinct diamond pattern. The young branches are bare and shiny with white lenticels.
The Silver Birch is also known as the European White Birch and Weeping Birch.
